7:05 PM EST. OT included. They turned the clock back in Long Island last night, as passionate Islanders fans flocked to the arena to make John Tavares’ return a miserable one. An Islanders home game hasn’t had an atmosphere like last night since their dynasty days in the early 80’s. From the pregame warmups until the final buzzer, for one night at least, Nassau Coliseum was as electric as any building has been this entire year and the Islanders responded with a 6-1 pounding over the Maple Leafs. John Tavares and the Maple Leafs skated off with their heads down when the final buzzer mercifully sounded. In case you missed it, we cannot overstate the electricity in that building last night.

Incidentally, the Islanders closed as a -117 to -120 favorite over Toronto last night and now they’re less against Washington. The thinking is that the Islanders are in a letdown spot here after that emotionally charged win last night and also, it’s the Islanders second game of back-to-backs and their third game in four nights. All that is true but we couldn’t care less. If you have sold the Islanders short this season (we’re guilty too), chances are that you have paid a price. The Islanders play full out 100% of the time and every player on that Islander bench knows how badly their coach wants to beat the team that didn’t want to extend his contract. We highly doubt the Islanders will be flat tonight.

Then there’s the Capitals, a team with a winning record that plays as bad as the Senators or worse. Break down any portion of the schedule to its entirety and you’ll find the Capitals near or in the bottom three in every key metric that includes CF%, High Danger Chances Against and Corsi Against (CA) among others. What’s even more alarming is that it’s getting worse as the season wears on. When the Capitals win, it’s not because they have outplayed the opposition. They win when their goaltender has a great game and they score a couple of power play goals. Of course that could happen again here but the Isles are the #1 ranked defensive team in the NHL and now we get them playing perhaps the worst defensive team in the NHL. We also get the Isles at home in an evenly priced game. That’s just not right.
