7:05 PM EST. Count the Blue Jackets among the "buyers" as we head into the stretch run after they dove into the deep end and picked the bones of the Senators by pulling both Matt Duchene and Ryan Dzingel from Ottawa over the weekend. On deadline day, the Jackets snatched goaltender Keith Kinkaid and defenseman Adam McQuaid from New Jersey. Duchene was positive about the addition of McQuaid and appears to like the direction his new team is going in, "McQuaid is a big, strong, hard-playing guy and just adds so much depth to our team. It's been really fun to watch this team and watch (general manager) Jarmo (Kekalainen) kind of push all-in here." That the Jackets held on to leading scorer Artemi Panarin despite the star forwards desire to become an unrestricted free agent this summer should also sit well with the Jackets locker room, as having him in the lineup obviously gives them the best chance to win.

The Penguins are on the outside looking in on the Eastern Conference playoff picture, but it's almost a foregone conclusion with the pundits that they'll make it to the postseason on reputation alone, yet we are not so sure about that. Pittsburgh is weak on the back end despite adding a pair of defensemen including Erik Gudbranson from Vancouver, it didn't get the big dog it needed. The Pens shipped off Tanner Pearson, who has not been able to find his game this season after being traded to Pittsburgh earlier in the year from Los Angeles. Chris Wideman also joins the fray from Florida, but he's a bottom six d-man at best and has also been traded multiple times this season after starting the year in Edmonton. For the Penguins to win, they have to score more goals than their opposition flat out, but that is not a long term recipe for success. The Pens have been giving up goals in bunches, allowing five to the Flames and Rangers, three to New Jersey and four in back to back games against the Sharks and Flyers respectively. As long as #87 is in the lineup, the Penguins are going to have considerable market appeal, but they are not a solid team to get behind.
