8:05 PM EST. OT included. This is a horrible situational spot for the Oilers on so many levels. First, Edmonton’s roster and its entire organization was livid when the league suspended Connor McDavid for two games at the worst possible time. The Oilers are in the thick of an intense race to make the playoffs and can’t afford to lose McDavid for a period, let alone two games. The Oilers vowed to dig down deep in McDavid’s absence and rally in support of him. They did just that with a 2-1 victory over the Ducks back at Rexall Place in the late game on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada. Edmonton mustered a mere 21 shots on net while allowing 34 and only the goaltending of Mikko Koskinen prevented the Oilers from a legit excuse for losing. Still, getting badly outplayed by the Ducks is not easy these days. After that emotional win, the Oilers will now play in an extremely difficult and hostile venue and they’ll do so while McDavid sits out his second game of said suspension. Additionally, the Oil have a game in Toronto on Wednesday in McDavid’s return to action, thus, this one sits right smack dab in the middle of Saturday’s emotionally charged win and a visit to Toronto on Wednesday. Finally, the Oilers could not have hand-picked a worse time to face the Predators.

The Preds lose games but it is a rare night when they’re embarrassed, as they were on Saturday, when the Avalanche went into Smashville and whacked the Preds, 5-0. Intensity for the Preds figures to be high here, especially considering that they are a pedestrian 5-4-1 over their last 10 games. We also like that the Preds power play ranks dead last in the NHL. They are operating at just under 13% with the man advantage despite having 10 players on the team with 10 or more goals this season. A correction to the good is coming in that extreme luck-driven statistic. Bottom line is that it’s a bad spot for the Oilers, as they severely lack secondary scoring and on their best day, even with McDavid in, they would be hard-pressed to win here. Now take McDavid out of the equation and throw in all the variables mentioned above and this figures to be a dominating performance from the Preds.
