6:05 PM EST. The Flyers defeated the Red Wings yesterday afternoon in OT no less, and they are now 5-2 over their last seven games with the four other victories occurring against the Canucks, Ducks, Oilers and Wild, five teams that will be golfing in April. Yesterday, Detroit held a 32-24 shots edge during five-on-five play and overall they outshot the Flyers 38-32. They also won the Corsi battle, 53-49 with the scoring chances being dead even. Detroit did all that with just one PP opportunity. In other words, the Red Wings once again didn’t get the luck driven bounces but as a +160 underdog, they were the prudent play that didn’t work out. Jimmy Howard was yanked after giving up five goals on 24 shots. Shame. Now the venue switches and if we played the Red Wings back in Philadelphia yesterday, damn straight we’re playing them again today.

With Carter Hart starting yesterday, the Flyers will either have to come back with Hart or turn to newly acquired Cam Talbot here. Detroit is likely going to start Jonathan Bernier here. Frankly, we couldn’t care less about the starters because it’s a crap shoot with all of them.

Yesterday we wrote that against Minnesota, Philadelphia was outchanced 29-12, was down 3-1 and scored five times on 25 shots for a 5-4 victory. When they beat the Canucks 2-1, the Flyers were outshot 40-32. When they beat the Oilers 5-4, it came in OT and again, the Flyers were outshot and outchanced. Philadelphia’s only legit victory recently was a 6-2 thrashing over the Ducks but every team is running over that squad. We could just as easily be talking about a Philadelphia squad that is 1-7 over its last eight.

Prior to yesterday’s battle in Philly, Detroit was coming off back-to-back wins over Nashville and Ottawa with the former taking place in Music City. The Red Wings not only won but had to kill six minors in that game. During five-on-five play, they created more chances than the Preds. Prior to beating that pair, Detroit dropped consecutive games at home versus Vegas and then on the road at Buffalo and Chicago. They outshot Chicago 45-35 and then held Buffalo to a lousy 21 shots on net in a 3-1 loss. In that 4-3 home loss to Vegas, they outshot the Knights, 39-32. Prior, the Red Wings reeled off three in a row with one of those victories being against the Maple Leafs in Toronto. All in all, the Red Wings are 5-4 over their last nine games but could easily be 9-0 because they’ve been in every game with a chance to win them all. Since January 1, the Red Wings rank 10th in CF% during five-on-five play and they rank 4th in Scoring Chances Against during that same span while Philadelphia ranks 28th and 23rd respectively in those same two categories. Philadelphia was -185 yesterday, a joke of a line and now the market will see them as a bargain at a pick-em. By contrast, we see the Red Wings as an absolute steal, at home and in much better form.
