7:05 PM EST. OT included. When we have a chance to bet against the Devils when they’re favored in this range, you can pencil us in every time unless the circumstances are extraordinary. On their very best day, New Jersey is as beatable as any team in the league and will gladly put that to the test here. In mid-December, New Jersey waltzed into Los Angeles and beat the Kings, 6-3. Jonathan Quick was in goal that day for L.A., while the great Taylor Hall was in uniform for the Devils. Today, neither of those two things are the same. Hall is out while Jack Campbell, the NHL’s best kept secret is in goal for the Kings.
Campbell doesn’t play as much as a true #1 because Quick has the contract but there is no disputing who the superior goaltender is. In fact, Campbell has been a top goaltender the entire season with a 2.13 goals-against-average and a .932 save percentage. Campbell ranks top-5 in every analytical category and in every surface category too and he’ll now face a team that isn’t very good to begin with. Incidentally, the Devils have the Islanders on deck.
Keith Kinkaid gets this start. Kinkaid allowed four goals on 25 shots in the Devils’ loss to the Rangers last Thursday. Kinkaid has given up at least three goals in six straight games, going 1-5-0 with a 3.71 GAA and .891 SV% over that span. In baseball, a starting pitching mismatch results in the superior starter being a big favorite because pitching decides games more than any other factor. In hockey, goaltending decides game more than any other factor but it the prices do not reflect that. We have to try and take advantage of that flaw in the betting line.
