There are lots of layers to this one so let’s start with the early start on the East Coast that has to favor the host Flyers, who are no strangers to early games on the weekend. For Edmonton, this is akin to a 10:00 AM start. Secondly, the Flyers have a game under their belt since the break when they went into Boston on Thursday and perhaps put forth their best game of the year in a 3-2 win. The Flyers dominated. Meanwhile, Edmonton has been off since January 22 and probably weren’t looking forward to getting back on the ice.

The third layer here is goaltending. Carter Hart allowed two goals on 25 shots in the Flyers win in Boston on Thursday. Hart has been one of the hottest goalies in the NHL as of late, winning five in a row while posting a 2.38 GAA and .930 SV%. Hart grew up 20 minutes outside of Edmonton and will get a shot at his hometown team this afternoon. By contrast, Cam Talbot got the hook back on Jan. 20 against Carolina in his last start. He has a 3.27 goals-against average and .894 save percentage and now he’ll play after being off for almost two full weeks.

The Oilers deservingly have the worst record in the NHL (5-12-0) since the middle of December. It’s actually disgusting that a team with so many high draft picks and perhaps the best player in the world is this bad but their record and their poor analytics are truly legit. The final layer is that the Oilers play in Montreal tomorrow afternoon on Super Bowl Sunday and for a team this bad that has no chance of making the playoffs, they can at least try and compete at that cathedral palace tomorrow in a game they are surely looking more forward to than this one.
