Of course there’s an overreaction to the Maple Leafs making the “deal of the year” so far when they picked up Jake Muzzin from the Kings while keeping every player on their current roster. The media is making it out to be like Muzzin is the second coming of Bobby Orr. He’s not. He’s an upgrade to a Leafs’ defense that was leaking badly and that gave up far too many high danger scoring chances to win the Cup.

We saw a similar reaction to the Bolts picking up Ryan McDonagh last year at the trade deadline but we haven’t heard McDonagh’s name since. There is a transition period when a new players comes on board and eats up 20 minutes a game. That means 20 less combined minutes for the others and no player likes to lose minutes. Muzzin will also have to get used to the propensities of the forwards and his defense partner, which does not happen overnight. The Leafs needed help back there but Jake Muzzin is not the impact player the media is making him out to be. Of course the Leafs can win here because they’re a filthy offensive machine that is going to start burying lots of pucks again soon but you will be paying a big premium to bet Toronto tonight and that makes us sellers.

The Red Wings are certainly one of, if not the most under-appreciated team in the league. Rarely are the Red Wings playing from a 2-goal deficit or more. Detroit has also outplayed and out-chanced six of their last seven opponents, which includes a great effort against Winnipeg in a game the Red Wings deserved to win, a 5-2 win over Minnesota in which they dominated and held the Wild to 18 shots on net and a 6-4 loss to Calgary in another game they deserved better in. The Red Wings are balanced and they can skate with any team in this league. As a dog priced in this range at home, Detroit is so worthy of a wager.
