7:05 PM EST. Regulation only. Last night Toronto went into Tampa Bay, outshot the Bolts 49-21 and lost 4-1. In another game, James Reimer allowed five goals on 26 shots while Devan Dubnyk allowed one goal on 31 shots in Minnesota’s 5-1 win over Florida. There were other games last night too where the better team on the ice lost because the better goaltender won. Every night in the NHL it is the same story --that being that the better goaltender wins probably in the neighborhood of 80% of games. We’ll apply that here too.
Cory Schneider allowed five goals on 37 shots in the Devils loss in Anaheim on Sunday. 2018-19 has been a total disaster for Schneider, who has gone 0-5-1 with a 4.29 GAA and .862 SV% in six starts and two relief appearances. That’s not even the worst of it. On December 27th of last season, Schneider picked up a win but has not won a single game since then. Last year, he missed five weeks with a groin injury aggravated on January 23 and needed offseason surgery to repair a torn cartilage his hip. Subsequently, he went 0-10-2 down the stretch with a 4.04 GAA and .863 SV%. He began losing starts to backup Keith Kinkaid, and when the playoffs began, Schneider was benched. Tonight, he will make his first start on home-ice and is still searching for his first win of the season and first win over his last 20 appearances. He ranks 59th out of 65 qualified goaltenders in Goals Saved Above Average. Frankly, we don’t care about anything else because it matters not. Schneider is getting paid 6 million a season and he’ll play because of it. If he wasn’t getting paid, he’d have been cut or waived. This is not a slump either, this is a case of a once great goaltender slowed down and ineffective because of injuries and he’s not getting it back. If goaltending decides outcomes more than anything else like we’re suggesting, then the Golden Knights are the play of the night.
