8:05 PM EST. OT included. Goaltending remains the number one deciding factor in the outcome of games. Last night for instance, the Kings out-chanced Detroit, 37-17 and lost 3-1. That’s just one example of dozens and dozens already this season. That brings us to Carey Price. In the last seven games, Price has allowed three or fewer goals. He’s won four of his last five. The team is tightening up defensively, allowing just 19 shots against Ottawa and fewer than 30 shots in each of their prior five games before allowing 39 shots Sunday. That’s how slumping starters generally turn things around – by having the team defend better and give them a few easier games. Once the goalie establishes confidence, he’ll take it from there. After six great games, Price was riding a wave of confidence that no doubt helped him stop 37 of 39 Sunday and steal that game. The Habs were not sharp against the Blackhawks but prior, they had been very sharp for weeks so figure them to come up with something much stronger here.

The Wild, after going on an absolute tear, have backslid hard. In the past six games, the Wild have lost five while allowing 22 goals against in those five losses. Why were they hot and now suddenly cold? Same story my friends---goaltending.

After months of riding goalies posting save percentages of over 94% consistently (with the occasional foray into the low 90’s and high 80’s) the inverse has happened. Over the past six games, just twice has the Wild goaltenders posted a save percentage over 90%, and then it was merely 91.67% against the Flames and Canucks. For weeks, the Wild were an average team with great goaltending and so they were winning. The past several games they have been the same average team with weak goaltending and so they’re losing. The idiots on TV will try and explain the Wilds’ slump to you but pay no attention, as we just explained it in one word (goaltending). If Devan Dubnyk is better than Carey Price here, we’ll rip this ticket up but Montreal is the superior team with the hotter goaltender and that makes them worthy of getting behind.
