7:05 PM EST. The Blue Jackets are rolling after a 6-3-1 run over their last 10 games, but while that stretch looks nice on the surface, it has been entirely fueled by a red hot power-play. While the Jackets rank 15th in the league with the man advantage, they have cashed in with a PP goal in four of their last six wins. When you score on the power play, you're chances of winning increase significantly, but if it were that easy, every team would do it. The reality is, most of these teams play a similar game when up a man and sometimes they get the breaks and sometimes they don't. Columbus has also killed off a ridiculous 13 of its last 14 penalties, which is a 93% clip. The league average is around 80%. When looking at 5-on-5 play, the Blue Jackets are a very pedestrian 19th in puck possession, but a top 10 (ninth) squad in PDO or puck luck. When their PK breaks down, or their power-play inevitably dries up, regression is coming. Meanwhile, Calgary is a legit threat to win every time it takes the ice.

The Flames have taken to new head coach Bill Peters’ focus on dictating the play like a duck to water, as they are a puck possession monster (fifth) and are very quietly one of the best teams in the league. Our only criticism of Calgary this season has been their insistence on starting goaltender Mike Smith, but as of this writing, David Rittich was in the starters net at practice. Even if he does not get the nod tonight, Smith has been hot as of late allowing just four goals in his last three starts with a .940 save percentage. We rode Smith's hot hand over the Blackhawks on Sunday and we won't back off here if it comes down to his being between the pipes. We also like that Peters is very familiar with the Jackets from his time spent as Carolina’s coach only this time around, he has the horses to win. The Flames are truly legit.
