7:05 PM EST. After getting thoroughly dominated on Saturday night against the Ottawa Senators, the Penguins enter play today tied for the worst record in the Eastern Conference and what is the second-worst record in the league (only the Los Angeles Kings have fewer points).

By points percentage, they are at the bottom of the Eastern Conference by themselves. Obviously, the Pens aren’t as bad as their record suggests but their bad record isn’t just a fluke either. It is a fitting representative of what the Penguins have been this season. A mostly inconsistent and at times very sloppy and bad hockey team. Look, we’ve seen this act before from the Pens, that being a slow start followed by a big push starting around December but this one feels and looks a bit different. Pittsburgh has goaltending issues and they have depth issues. The bottom six is nothing like previous years and now one can take Sidney Crosby out of the equation for at least this one game. While it would not be unreasonable to expect a big response from the Pens after Saturday night, we have to question whether they are good enough to be priced in this range even if they do respond and the answer is that they are not.

Despite being 12-6-2 with five straight wins, the Sabres are still not getting the credit they deserve and that makes them very playable at this price. What we especially like is that Buffalo has scored just 2, 2 and 3 goals over its last three games and won them all. What happens when the Sabres start getting a little more puck luck and burying some of those opportunities? The Sabres rookie D-man, Rasmus Dahlin, is outstanding and looking better with each passing game. The Sabres are not a one-man show like Edmonton is anymore and they’re also getting quality goaltending. Buffalo may or may not win here but that’s not of our concern, as we continue to go with the best of it and in that regard, Buffalo is the prudent play here.
