7:35 PM EST. The Red Wings just beat the red-hot Canucks and have reeled off four wins in their last five games but a team this flawed cannot sustain winning and therefore this would be a great time to jump in and start fading. Detroit was lucky last game v Vancouver after getting out-chanced 29-20 and outshot in 42-30. A late, soft goal tied it 2-2 and the Red Wings won it in OT. The Red Wings get outplayed just about every game. They have taken more penalties than any team in the NHL because they are chasing the puck so often. They rank bottom five in several categories and bottom three in others. However, because they have been winning lately, we get to fade them for the time being at a bargain and that’s precisely what we’re going to do. The experts have been jamming it into the public’s mind that this was a rebuild year for the Rangers and maybe it is but if so, it’s way ahead of schedule. New York dumped a bunch of older and slower players at the deadline last year and in the offseason in favor of younger, quicker and talented players. They hired a coach who takes no prisoners and no bullshit. David Quinn has already benched Pavel Buchnevich among others and Buchnevich has responded with back-to-back strong games since being inserted back into the lineup. The coach has the Rangers playing an aggressive, fast paced style and the players are embracing it big time. Suddenly, there is a very good feeling around the Rangers, who are winning with far more regularity than expected. Tuesday’s 5-3 victory over the Habs at the Garden represented not only the team’s fourth straight victory but elevated the record to a respectable 7-7-1 that moved the team to within two points of the second wild-card spot. Hard work is becoming the Blueshirts’ badge and it’s not like they are without talent. The Vladislav Namestnikov-Mika Zibanejad and Buchnevich line is creating havoc. The second line of Jimmy Hayes, Ryan Spooner and Chris Kreider are tough, they create and they defend well too. Jimmy Vesey and Brett Howden are two outstanding “bottom six” forwards. Defensemen Neal Pionk, Brady Skjei and Anthony DeAngelo are three potential studs among some veteran presence like Marc Staal, Kevin Shattenkirk and Brendan Smith. This is a very decent team that is still underpriced and until that changes, we’ll continue to back them.
