7:05 PM EST. Regulation only. Lots of good reasons to get behind the Penguins here after the Islanders went into Pittsburgh on Tuesday night and ruined what was supposed to be a spirit uplifting victory for that community. The Isles won that game 6-3 but the score says nothing about the effort the Pens put forth and how badly they outplayed the Islanders. The Islanders scored three goals on their first seven shots. When the Islanders buried their third goal with 10 minutes to go in the second period it was their first shot on net in said period. When they buried their fourth goal, two minutes later, it was their third shot on net in the second period and at that point, they were being outshot, 27-8 and had a 5-2 lead. When Matt Murray was finally yanked, his stat line was five goals allowed on nine shots. Matt Murray had a bad game, which is the only reason Pittsburgh lost so pay no attention to the final result.

In fact, to give you an idea of how the market reacts to scores and not performance, we had a reader tweet this out to us, “Wrong goalie. If this is their (Penguins) show of emotion, they’re heartless”.

That’s just another reaction to a score and not a performance. Pittsburgh played their hearts out and dominated the Islanders but lost. It happens and we point it out often because these misleading results continue to provide with opportunities like this one. The Islanders are the top PDO team in the NHL, a metric that measures LUCK.

Previously, Matt Murray had been brilliant in net in a 3-0 victory in Toronto and a 9-1 win in Calgary. Regardless, it does not matter if Mike Sullivan comes back with Murray or turns to Casey DeSmith, as both have proven to be very capable. There is no reason to believe that the Pens won’t dominate again but this time, they’ll face Thomas Greiss after Robin Lehner was injured last game. Greiss brings a .933 SV% into this one but if there was ever a goalie in line for regression, it would be him. Greiss posted a .892 SV% last year over 27 games played and his GSAA ranked 65th out of 69 qualified goaltenders. Penguins will outplay the Islanders again, thus to win, the Isles will need to get very lucky again.
