9:05 PM EST. Regulation only. Nashville is 5-1 and seemingly on its way to another great season but we’re still not buying into it. The Preds five wins have come against the Rangers and Islanders in their first two games of the year in which they were outplayed and out-chanced in both. Next came victories over the Islanders again, Winnipeg and Minnesota. Against Winnipeg, Nashville had 9 (!) power-plays so Winnipeg played that game shorthanded for one third of the game. Against Minnesota, perhaps the slowest team in the NHL, Nashville once again barely escaped after getting outshot in that one too. On paper, Nashville’s 5-1 record looks pretty but the performances on the ice against a weak schedule does not.

It’s also worth mentioning that the Predators have started preliminary discussions regarding a potential contract extension for starting goaltender Pekka Rinne. Rinne is in the final season of a seven-year contract and in that time, he has established himself in the upper echelon of goalies around the league while he is the reigning Vezina Trophy winner. However, he turns 36 next month and allows far too many soft goals. With a contract on the line, there is pressure to perform well at his age and we don’t trust him to do so.

Calgary’s got a new coach in Bill Peters this year, which tends to result in a bunch of changes that show up fairly quickly in the data. Calgary has turned into a top possession team quickly. Elias Lindholm is fulfilling his offensive potential and has instantly become a big factor now that’s he’s playing with some legit playmakers and offensive threats. Sam Bennett is becoming a factor too and we haven’t even mentioned the other usual suspects on this potential powerhouse of a team. Calgary has won four of its last five games and they have played some strong teams over that stretch. We mentioned that Nashville is 5-1 but failed to mention that its only loss was to these same Flames back in Nashville and there isn’t any reason to believe this one will be different. Calgary cannot be a dog at home.
