8:35 PM EST. OT included. Dallas dominated the 2017 offseason with several high-profile acquisitions and subsequently climbed from 79 to 92 points. Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin and Alexander Radulov formed a dynamite top line. Radek Faksa has emerged as one of the game’s better two-way centers and John Klingberg belongs on the short list of the NHL’s best pure scoring defensemen. Even with their elite top line, the Stars had the NHL’s 18th-ranked offense last season and they didn’t add any scoring help over the summer. Blake Comeau gives Dallas more of what it already had: third-line types shoehorned into second-line duty. New coach Jim Montgomery vows to push a much quicker pace than retired Ken Hitchcock did, but does he have the horses to do so? The Stars have one of the NHL’s weaker groups on the wing after Benn and Radulov. The Stars defense has some potential to be sure with Miro Heiskanen, Julius Honka and Esa Lindell joining Klingberg as the top four but the addition of Marc Methot and Roman Polak slows them down. Finally, Ben Bishop is a brittle No. 1 goalie. He has big games because of his massive frame but he’s slower than most and frequently gives up soft goals. As the chalk in this range, Dallas is unappealing.

It’s tough to sugarcoat a season in which the Coyotes finished third-last for a second straight year and missed the playoffs for a sixth consecutive time. However, we’re going to sugarcoat it. You may remember that the Coyotes started the year off 0-10-1, thus, it was over before it even started. Fact of the matter is, Arizona was a solid team on the rise down the stretch. In the final two months of last year – a span in which most teams played 30 games – the Coyotes ranked second in the Pacific Division, fifth in the Western Conference and 11th overall. That’s getting into upper-crust territory. It took a while for Arizona’s young team to adapt to new coach Rick Tocchet’s high-tempo style, but when it did, it played extremely well for a long stretch. The additions of Alex Galchenyuk, Michael Grabner and Vinnie Hinostroza will boost a popgun attack and young forwards such as Clayton Keller, Brendan Perlini, Christian Fischer and Dylan Strome have that much more experience. Arizona’s top three lines will produce and might even go off. A veteran defense corps led by Oliver Ekman Larsson doesn’t hurt but here’s the kicker: Antti Raanta. Raanta might be the NHL’s best goaltender, who has been getting progressively better every season that his workload increases. He led the league in SAVE % above expected last year and it wasn’t close (http://moneypuck.com/goalies.htm ). He also led the league in Save % on unblocked shots, meaning very few softies. The Coyotes are underpriced to be sure and at some point there will be a market correction so the time to buy would be now before that occurs.
