7:05 PM EST. Regulation only. For months we were fading the Rangers when they were winning while insisting that they were nothing but a bunch of imposters that were getting very lucky. The NHL media and most bettors play results. Now that the Rags are losing, that same group are calling them a dumpster fire. Now that the Rangers are losing every game, their stock has hit rock bottom. The trading of Rick Nash to the Bruins adds to the Rangers stock falling, as management has thrown in the proverbial white towel on the season. All of that is true but we couldn’t care less.
We are in the business of buying low and the New York Rangers would’ve been -170 favorite against Detroit at MSG three weeks ago just like they were back in late November. The argument is that the Rangers are worse now and they’re without Nash, Ryan McDonagh and Michael Grabner. That's true too but but so what. Chris Kreider is back and so is Pavel Buchnevich. Both those guys are impact players. The Rags have brought up some young D-men and they look much better and quicker than those useless defenders they had before. The replacements bring youth, energy and determination because they are trying to prove they belong. When you look at the Rags roster now, it doesn’t look worse to us.
The first line is rock solid with Kreider back in:
Chris Kreider – Mika Zibanejad – Pavel Buchnevich
The second line could play for any team in this league:
Jimmy Vesey – Kevin Hayes – Mats Zuccarello
The bottom six, J.T. Miller - David Desharnais - Jesper Fast -- Anthony DeAngelo – Vinni Lettieri – Paul Carey are all capable and belong at this level. With Grabner and Nash gone, it opens the door for guys like Carey, who was a prolific scorer in college and has shown signs of that brilliance at this level and Lettieri, who looks dangerous ever so often. The Rags may have thrown in the towel but they have not quit and now that the market has jumped off, we’re jumping on when it’s warranted like it is here.
