7:05 PM EST. OT Included. What we have here are two teams that are both creating a plethora of scoring chances but in this game they’ll be doing that against two backup goaltenders in Keith Kinkaid (or Eddie Lack) for the Devils and Cam Ward (or Scott Darling) for the Hurricanes. It really doesn’t matter which goaltenders start because all four are backup quality, thus making this total a very beatable one indeed. When we look at the GSAA (Goals Saved Above Average) metric, we find Scott Darling ranked 65 out of 66 qualified goaltenders with Cam Ward, Keith Kinkaid and Eddie Lack ranking 36th, 60th and 78th respectively. Lack does not qualify but if he did, he would be ranked at or near the bottom.
The Hurricanes have scored 4, 3, and 7 goals over their last three games against Vancouver, Colorado and Los Angeles respectively. That’s important to note because when the puck is going in, the players are more relaxed and confident and can’t wait to get back on the ice. Carolina ranks 5th and 9th respectively in Expected Goals For and High Danger Scoring Chances/60 over the past five weeks while the Devils rank 4th and 5th respectively in the same two categories over the same five week span. The Devils have allowed three goals or more in five straight, four goals or more in four or those five and five goals or more in three of five. Weak goaltending, two hot offenses that are both creating and capable set this one up nicely to go over early and easy. Totals aren’t usually on our menu but man, this one sticks out.
