7:05 PM EST. Regulation only. With a new coach and a new general manager at the helm, optimism heading into the season was higher with the hope that Buffalo could turn their fortunes around. That hasn’t happened. Instead, the Sabres find themselves with a lower points percentage than last year and as a result, they are squarely at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. That three-game winning streak before the break was nice but they’ve gone back to being the Sabres since with two losses after the break, both at home. The Sabres also took seven minor penalties in its last game. As trade rumors swirl, there is more uncertainty than stability. Some of the beat reporters have also suggested that Phil Housley is on borrowed time and is in over his head. The Sabres are also more vulnerable at home than they are on the road, where they’re just 6-14-2 this season and now there’s lots of empty seats at KeyBank Center. The Sabres also picked a bad time to face the Blues.
St. Louis is coming off a 3-1 loss to the Bruins on Thursday, which is a flattering score to the Blues. They put forth one of, if not, it’s worst effort of the season. The Bruins dominated play from about the midway point of the first period until the final buzzer. They outshot St. Louis 22-6 in the second period and fired away 46 shots on net overall. The Blues were lifeless but what makes it even worse is that it was the first game of their annual “Dad’s Trip”, in which players and teams usually thrive in the first game of said trip. In fact, since they started the dad’s trip two years ago, St. Louis was 4-0 in those games prior to being embarrassed by the B’s. Win or lose, St. Louis will show up tonight. They are not going to get embarrassed in front of the fathers again and will play their hearts out for 60 minutes. That should be plenty to emerge victorious.
