6:05 PM EST. OT included. Of course we understand what the Golden Knights have accomplished this season, as it has become the sports story of 2017/18 and will continue to be so. Gary Bettman hit the jackpot with this expansion franchise, as the Vegas Knights have brought as much attention to this sport since Wayne Gretzky did back in the early 80’s. Give the Knights all the credit in the world for working hard, playing hard and having some strong analytics to go with it. However, they cannot be favored in Carolina and if we’re sticking to playing value, the ‘Canes must be played here.
Carolina would be a Cup contender if they had adequate goaltending. If they lose here, it likely won’t be because they got outplayed, as the ‘Canes rarely get dominated and rarely get outworked. They have allowed the fewest shots on net in the NHL and they’re ranked top-three in several key analytical categories, both offensively and defensively. The Hurricanes outstanding performances on the ice all season long are a true testimony of how important goaltending is. If, for instance, Carolina had, let’s say a Frederick Andersen-like goaltender, they would be a top-5 team and virtually a lock to make the playoffs. How crazy is this line? The Hurricanes have been at home for 20 games this season. They were a -108 fav against Tampa Bay earlier this year and have not been a dog at home even once. They were -124 over Washington, -138 over Pittsburgh, -145 over Nashville, -126 over Dallas, -133 over Calgary and the list goes on and on. Yeah, they could lose but we’re not in the prediction business and therefore the Carolina Hurricanes must be played as a pooch in its own barn.
