L.A. Chargers +4 -105 over Kansas City

8:15 PM EST. In case you had forgotten, Patrick Lavon Mahomes II is a pretty damn good quarterback. At least, so we’ve heard. It’s all the talking heads were yapping about in the lead up to this first Amazon Prime time Thursday Night Football spectacular. Mahoes went off in Week 1 against the defensively depleted Cardinals in Arizona for 360 yards and five touchdowns. Mahomes had three touchdowns in three drives, which was quicker than many of the State Farm Stadium faithful in Arizona could get their popcorn. We wagered on that game. Cardinals +6. That ticket was dead in the desert faster than you could say “They are who we thought they were!”. Dang, we miss Dennis Green.

For Chargers backers and fans last week, it was looking like a lazy Sunday afternoon with an easy win. Los Angeles took a 17-3 into the half and looked every bit as dominant as that score would suggest. The second half was a different story, as the Raiders finally began to show life. A Devante Adams touchdown with 4:32 to go would close the gap to 24-19, just a point and a half above the closing line of 3½. If you held a ticket on the Chargers and were watching that game, you were doing it with a tight grip and a sweaty brow.

The injury bug hit the Chargers in Week 1, as top wideout Keenan Allen was injured, which has the injury chasers on alert. Losing someone of Allen’s ilk might look bad on paper, but dude is hurt every year. Playing without him is not something new for Justin Herbert. Also banged up is running back Austin Ekler, who is expected to play despite his already laundry list of ailments. He, too, has been often injured, so no big deal.

For many, last Thursday was the first “real” NFL game they wagered on and for many more it was the first time they were able to legally bet a game. That night, the Bills went into Los Angeles with the whole market behind them and kicked the dog shit out of the Rams. Easy winner. This week, the market is being fed another very popular and very high profile team in Kansas City. A team that just kicked ass last week with the market behind them, too. This week the prudent thing to do would be to react to the market’s overreaction to the Chiefs and trust that we are being presented with some tremendous value on the Chargers. Oh, and in case you missed it, Justin Herbert is every bit as good as any QB in this league and it might not be a good idea to be spotting him and the unpredictable but very powerful Chargwers getting points on a short week. If you wait until game time, you will probably get another half point or more. No reason to bet this early because the line is not dropping.

For those asking, yes, you must sign up for Amazon Prime to watch Thursday Night Football this season. Full stop. The NFL Network will not be simulcasting the games, and neither will anyone else unless of course you live in Canada or subscribe to our service. If you live in the local market of either the Chargers or Chiefs, you can watch the game on TV, so check your local listings. For streaming subscribers, TSN in the Canada Group has it. In the USA LOCALS, CBS or NBC Groups, you will find the game being televised on Channel 386 (KSHB NBC Kansas City) or Channel 68 (FOX KTTV Los Angeles). The channels may vary but do a search for KSHB or KTTV and you’ll find it.
