PHILADELPHIA -4½ -108 over Detroit

1:00 PM EST. The Eagles were battered, bruised and beat by the Falcons in front of the football world on Sunday night. You won't read or hear anything about Philadelphia without reference to the laundry list of players in the infirmary. Wide receivers Alshon Jeffery and DeSean Jackson both left the Sunday nighter, while tight end Dallas Goedert came up limp with a sore calf during warmups and did not play versus the Dirty Birds. Often injured quarterback Carson Wentz was evaluated for a concussion,  but would only miss a series. Even with the Eagles players dropping like flies, Wentz nearly led his team back from a 17-6 second-half hole. Don't let the Eagles injury woes influence your handicapping. This is a "next man up" league and those that do take the field for Philly on Sunday will be playing with a big chip on their shoulders. Last week's high profile defeat, combined with its lackluster performance in Week 1 against the lowly Redskins has the Eagles stock trending downward, while the Lions are on the way up.

Detroit is undefeated after a 1-0-1 start to the season with its 13-10 win over the Chargers carrying significant weight this week. A "good" win like that against a credible squad gives the Lions market appeal heading into this one, especially when being offered a significant pile of points. We say, “buyer beware” because, unless we’re reading the market wrong, it looks too good to be true. The Eagles haven't cashed a ticket yet, while the Lions won a game that many expected they would not. That sets up a perfect zig-zag situation. The market pounced on the Lions when this game opened with Philly favored by -7½. That is a "favorite" number, as the "hook" on a key number like seven encourages wagerers to grab the points. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, that oddsmakers are 100% aware of who’s playing and who’s not. They didn’t hesitate for a second when they put this game up on the board early with all the others. When a significant injury takes place or significant players are questionable, the line will be off the board until some concrete information becomes available, especially on Monday and Tuesday but there it was in all its glory on Tuesday morning (Philadelphia -7), less than 12 hours after the Eagles lost to Atlanta on Monday and with several players questionable for its tilt with Detroit. That the oddsmakers didn’t give a flying f**K resonates with us in a big way and sometimes one has to read between the lines or recognize something that smells odd. This one delivers that smell and if you bet the Lions or were thinking of doing so, we urge you to proceed with caution.
