8:15 PM EST. The 1-7 Giants are coming off a bye and have lost their last five games. Despite coming off a bye, this market has not forgotten how putrid the Giants look almost every week. They recently lost by seven to the Redskins in what had to be considered one of the worst games of the year. Before that, they appeared in prime time against the Falcons and their backers received an absolute miracle cover when it didn’t seem possible but later vowed to “never bet that f**king team again. The Giants haven’t won since Week 3 and it feels like they haven’t covered since then either.

Then of course there is Eli Manning. If his name was Eli Fartsock, his career would have been over five years ago. Instead, he’s more entrenched than he’s ever been. His backup is fourth rounder, Kyle Lauletta, who cannot possibly be a real person. All it took was one unceremonious benching last season for Eli to somehow consolidate power all across this dopey organization. The fact that Tom Coughlin dragged Blake Bortles to the AFC title game last year will only make the Mara family’s prolonged boner for continuity worse. The Giants are getting hammered by both the local and national media, as they have the fewest wins (1) in the NFL along with the sickening Raiders. The Giants’ stock has hit rock bottom because the market is obsessed with wins and loses and that obsession once again provides us with an opportunity.

Lost in all of the Giants woes is that unlike the one-win Raiders, the G-Men have pro-bowl talent all over the field or on all three units (offense, defense, special teams). Five of their seven losses were by seven points (one score) or less and we now get them at their biggest bargain price of the season. Buying the Giants here is akin to buying an air-conditioner in January.

By contrast, the time is perfect to sell on the 49ers. The last time we saw San Francisco, the market was lining up out the door to bet against them on Thursday night against the Raiders. Imagine that. San Fran closed as an underdog against Oakland (imagine that too) and now this week they are favored against the Giants all because of that one result.

Once C.J. Beathard was ruled out and Nick Mullens, a QB that had never thrown an NFL pass before, was announced, the market took over and started hammering the Raiders. Big mistake, as Mullen completed 16 of 22 passes for 262 yards and three touchdowns. He had no turnovers. He had no sacks and now he’s had 10 days of hearing how great he was. That situation was much different than this one, as he has expectations here and the Giants have film. Aside from that, this is not the Raiders, a team that Alabama or Michigan would destroy and that Rutgers would have a chance against. We saw a similar situation unfold yesterday when Buffalo announced late that Matt Barkley would start. Barkley was the Bills fourth QB this season running the league’s worst offense and all Buffalo did was score more points than they have in perhaps a decade or more. Next week will be different for Barkley but for Nick Mullens, this week will be different for him. That’s not the only thing that will be different. The 49ers were disrespected last week in a very big way and responded in a very big way. This week we have a complete reversal of roles, as the Giants are being disrespected in a big way and figure to respond too. Last week, the market couldn’t wait to fade Nick Mullens and this week, it can’t wait to get behind him. The Giants check every box this week in things we look for including a classic case of zig-zagging (bet against San Francisco last week, bet them this week) and we are now in line for one of the best value plays of the year.
