12:00 PM EST. Everyone loves a good story and this year’s feel-good team are the “Fighting Squids” or the artist formerly known as the Tulane Green Wave. The Wave come into this game as the highest ranking of the Group of Five outfit in the country and though there is plenty of football left to be played, some prognosticators have already begun to pencil Tulane in as this year’s New Year’s Six Group of Five participant.

With the media jumping onto the story and the College Football Playoff Committee quantifying the Green Wave’s accolades thus far and putting them at #19 in their poll, the market is buying into the narrative. That’s even before we mention that Tulane is also 7-1 on the year against the spread. Without trying to sound redundant, we’ll once again emphasize being “too late to the party”. If you buy Tulane today, you would be buying them when their stock is through the roof. It’s akin to having bought Bitcoin when it was at $65K a coin back in November of last year. The time to buy Bitcoin would be now at a fraction of that price. Buying football teams works in very much the same manner.

So, these familiar foes will meet again, as the Golden Hurricane and Green Wave have played every year since 2005. Tulane enters this one with extra rest off a bye week while the Golden Hurricane are coming off a 45-34 loss to SMU. Tulsa has been forced to play roulette at the quarterback position all season. Davis Brin entered the season with high expectations after throwing for nearly 3,330 yards last season. Brin hurt his ankle in Week 4 against Ole Miss, then probably returned too early in the Golden Hurricane's Week 5 matchup with Cincinnati. Backup Braylon Braxton has been able to make some impressive plays with his legs, but he plays a different style than Brin. Braxton and Brin split time in last week's 45-34 loss to SMU. The Golden Hurricanes have some frustrating losses on their resume this season. They lost at Wyoming in overtime despite out-gaining the Cowboys by 122 yards. They essentially played Ole Miss dead-even in Oxford (462-457 in total yards, 27-27 in first downs, 6.2 yards per play to 5.9). Tulsa is absolutely better than its record shows and now the Green Wave has to prepare to play two QB’s and not one. It’s no coincidence that Tulsa HC Philip Montgomery had both QB’s playing last week, the week before this showdown.

This could be a dangerous situation for Tulane too. On deck is UCF, a team who incidentally has also materialized in the College Football Playoff Top 25. Tulane will curate hosting duties for this affair and there is little question that this would be one of the most significant contests to ever grace the Tulane University campus, as it would be a potential ranked showdown with a known mid-major power for the inside track to the American Athletic Conference Championship and a potential New Year’s Six Bowl. With this looming on the horizon, it is not beyond imagination that the Green Wave will be guilty of looking ahead and get caught doing so. Upset possibility looms large here so throw some small parlays together with Tulsa on the money line. We’ll do that too and we’ll also scoop up the points.
