8:00 PM EST. There is a perception in the market that the Hokies are going to bounce back here after losing a last-second heartbreaker to Old Dominion last week. Why? First and foremost, the Hokies are led by a career assistant coach in Brent Pry, who didn’t take his first head coaching gig (this one) until he was 52. We’re not hating on the man’s age, but the leap from assistant to head boss is a big one that comes with a ton of extra responsibilities. Pry is in a tough spot after six years of rough waters under former coach Justin Fuente.

These are not the Hokies teams of years past, as the ghosts of Frank Beamer and Bud Foster still haunt this program after its glory days 30 years ago. Fuente left the cupboard bare, the fan base pissed off, and the school's relationship with the community pipeline expected to funnel talent to the team in a bad place. The 2022 Hokies are not a good football team.

Don’t get us wrong, none of this is coach Pry’s fault, but he’s installing a new offense, mending fences, and trying to build up what little talent he has on this squad. That's a lot. There are going to be growing pains here, but the market still regards the Hokies as a college football power, when they most certainly are not. Losing at home to Old Dominion as just a 6-point favorite should have made that pretty clear.

Enter the Eagles of Boston College, who had their own trouble last week, dropping a 22-21 decision to Rutgers in a game they were favored by 9-points. The loss was disappointing to be sure, but one doesn’t have to dig too deep to find out what the hell happened. Turnovers. Three to be exact, and another three fumbles that were not lost, but were momentum-killing. That the Eagles were still in that game and actually winning until Rutgers scored with 2:43 to play is pretty damn impressive considering the comedy of errors. We always preach that penalties and turnovers often decide the outcomes of these games. That in-game variance was on full display last week.

The Eagles had relatively high expectations entering the season, but with that first loss out of the way, perhaps they can exhale and just play football. Had the Eagles won and covered last week, there is a great chance they’d have been favored in this spot. That presents us with an opportunity to take advantage this week. We get the better team by a country mile and we get to take back a plus price. Sign us up.
