West Virginia +7½ over Pittsburgh

Acrisure Stadium - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

7:00 PM EST. Perhaps no team in America overperformed as much as Pittsburgh did last season. We don’t want to take anything away from coach Pat Narduzz (who was one more bad season away from getting sacked) and a side that won the ACC championship, but we are going to be those guys. Gone are Heisman Trophy finalist and starting quarterback Kenny Pickett, who is now with the Steelers, and Biletnikoff Award (best FBS WR) winner Jordan Addison, who transferred to USC. Addison is the #2 ranked receiver in the nation and won’t be easily replaced.

Pitt rewarded Narduzzi with a contract extension, because why not, even though he’s only led his team to one major bowl game in his tenure. Now, the Panthers have the weight of expectations on their shoulders and a national ranking (#17) beside their name. What could possibly go wrong?

The Mountaineers have yet to find their footing under fourth-year coach Neal Brown, who has gone 17-18 over that tenure. Brown is not in a place too far from where Narduzz was a year ago, at least in fan and market apathy. Where he differs is that Narduzz had much more time to make the Panthers his own. This will be the first season, after three years of recruiting, that these Mountaineers are truly Brown’s through and through.

Brown welcomes Georgia transfer, JT Daniels, to take over under center and he should be well protected with all five starters on the offensive line coming back this season. Receivers Bryce Ford-Wheaton, Reese Smith, and Kaden Prather will compete for targets.

Despite the market and fan apathy toward the Mountaineers, Brown has taken them to three straight bowl games and there is little reason to think WVU won’t better this season. These inflated points are far too generous to leave on the table, but do not be shocked if the Mountaineers win this game outright.
