Tulsa -7½ over Old Dominion

Myrtle Beach Bowl Pres. by TaxAct Brooks Stadium – Conway, SC

2:30 PM EST. Indeed, the Monarchs come into this game covering six of their last seven and winning five straight but we would remiss to highlight that Old Dominion’s six wins this year, include the following: Charlotte (a dreg), Florida International (a cupcake), Florida Atlantic (another Betty Crocker original), Hampton (an FCS creampuff), Louisiana Tech (a team that fired their head coach and did not qualify for a bowl game), and Middle Tennessee State, a 7-6 Conference-USA team that the market thought would get clobbered on Friday by Toledo. In summation, Old Dominion’s diet has been nothing but empty calories. One cannot argue the same for the Golden Hurricane.

Tulsa may have the same amount of wins and losses as their counterpart, but let’s examine who those losses came against: at Ohio State (where Tulsa played the Buckeyes tough into the fourth quarter until two scores in the final three minutes made the scoreboard look like the game was far less competitive than it was), a five-point loss at Oklahoma State (a team potentially a yard away from a College Football Playoff berth), an eight-point loss at Cincinnati (who is in the playoff), Houston (who was ranked before Cincy took them out in the American Athletic Conference Championship Game), Navy (who proved they were a much better team than their 4-8 record against Army), and a two-point loss against UC Davis to get their season started. UC Davis hovered around the top-10 in the FCS standings all through 2021, so by no means are they a weak side.

Bottom line is that Tulsa is massively more battle tested. They navigated through one of the toughest schedules in the country by any mid-major team in the country while the ODU navigated its way through a weak schedule that included playing a bunch a weak C-USA team. Furthermore, ODU lost five of its first six games before making a QB switch but truth be told, they were torched by some average teams as well. ODU caught fire against bad teams to close the year but the Golden Hurricane do not qualify as a weak team. No, they are a well-balanced squad that ODU cannot keep up with.
