VANDERBILT +13 -104 over Stanford

Vanderbilt Stadium, Nashville, TNStreaming: ESPNU

8:00 PM EST. Stanford shocked then #14 USC last week in what was one of the biggest upsets of this young college football season. The Trojans were a 17-point home favorite. The loss was so bad for USC that it fired coach Clay Helton. College Football is big business, thus a loss as a 17-point favorite will not be tolerated.

A win over ranked USC is as resonating and eye-opening as one could imagine. If you follow this sport, you have heard about it and read about it more than once. It's just good fodder and has kept Stanford in the college football conversation all week. It is a program with pedigree, and so it does not take long for the market to get onboard. However, that final score and the high profile fallout do not tell the whole story of that game. The Trojans actually had more first downs (24-to-18), won the time of possession by over four minutes, and outgained the Cardinal 408 yards to 375. Let us not forget that the Cardinal got waffled by Kansas State (24-7) to open the season. This game is also in a disadvantageous spot on the Stanford calendar, as it goes from playing a rival Pac-12 foe, to traveling East for a non-conference game, to playing UCLA and Oregon at home in back-to-back weeks.

While Stanford's road win last week was most newsworthy, Vanderbilt’s was not. In fact, those that stayed up late to catch that game may have turned it off early after Colorado State went up 14-0. The best Commodore on the field at that point was punter Harrison Smith, who loved that sweet, thin, and skunky mountain air. His best boot was a 66-yarder. Those that stuck around would see Vandy settle and then take over that game, squeaking out a 27-24 victory. Unlike Stanford, nobody was talking about that game on Monday morning, which has Vandy under the radar.

Going from a double-digit road dog to double digit road chalk is a lot to ask of even the toughest, most disciplined programs in the country. Add a little West Coast to Music City travel, and it's an even taller order. This is a 30-point swing (depending on where you shop) from one week to the next for Stanford. It's not like Vandy is some scrub FCS side with nothing to offer. The Commodores play in arguably the toughest conference in America (SEC), which means they are battle-tested year in and year out, even if the wins aren't always there. There is a big difference between winning and covering, but trust us when we say, we would not write this game up if we didn't think that Vandy could win outright.
