MIAMI -7½ over Appalachian State

Hard Rock Stadium – Miami Gardens, FL

Streaming: ESPN U

7:00 PM EST. After witnessing the Hurricanes get dismantled last week by Alabama before a national audience, we doubt the market will be anxious to be spotting more than a converted TD with them in their follow-up. In the spirit of “sticking with it”, among many other reasons, we’re not hesitant in the least to come right back on them.

We strongly trust that -7½ is one of the best favorite prices to be play. When we see a team favored by that much, it instantly prompts us to look closer because it is a price that is designed to entice action on the underdog. The hook on such a key number like 7 provides dog backers with a false sense of security that there is insurance should said underdog lose by seven. The hook is the bait but favorites priced in this range typically win decisively.

Miami was down 27-0 last week in one of the most anticipated games of the weekend. The game was televised at 3:30 PM EST on ABC and it featured two ranked teams, including the always popular Crimson Tide.

Appalachian State is mid-major royalty that has never had qualms about playing or upsetting Power Five teams in the past. Against ECU in the Duke’s Mayo Classic in a prime-time Thursday night game, the Mountaineers were a 9-point favorite and had no problem laying waste to ECU. App State led by as much as 24, but it could have even been more. While the Pirates were able to score a couple junk-time touchdowns to diminish the margin of defeat, those that watched the Mountaineers steamroll East Carolina were left with a very favorable impression of the Mountaineers. Now, if we put this all together we have App State with its reputation for upsets and its strong showing in Week 1 taking back a converted touchdown-plus-hook against Miami who had one of the worst exhibitions in Week 1. Week 2 in any football league usually prompts the biggest over and under-reactions of the season, as the market gets its first look at teams and reacts. We’re going to trust we’re the beneficiaries of that here.
