VIRGINIA +110 over Virginia Tech

Scott Stadium – Charlottesville, VA

12:00 PM EST. Thanksgiving Weekend is filled to the brim with rivalry games where anything can happen. It is only fitting that Black Friday gets started with The Commonwealth Cup which pits the Hokies of Virginia Tech against the Cavaliers of Virginia. This edition of the Cup is a high-stakes affair, as the winner gets the opportunity to go to Charlotte next weekend to face off with Clemson for the ACC hardware. Given Virginia Tech’s dominance and profitability in this series, the Gobblers come into this rivalry contest as a popular choice.

The Hokies have won the last 15 meetings between these two sides and they have covered in the last three Commonwealth Cups. This narrative alone will influence the action and it certainly has from the off-set, as some books dared open with the Hoos being a one-point favorite but that number quickly adjusted to where UVA is now priced as the underdog.

The Wahoos are undefeated on their pitch this season (6-0 SU) and we trust that they will hone their home cooking here to gain a critical edge in what will be one of the biggest games in recent history for this program. More importantly, the wrong side is favored here and the numbers back it up. Tech has surged since getting its doors blown off by Duke midseason, as the Hokies have risen from 75th to 42nd in S/P+.

The S&P+ Ratings are a college football ratings system derived from the play-by-play and drive data of all 800+ of a season's FBS college football games (and 140,000+ plays). The components for S&P+ reflect opponent-adjusted components of four of what Bill Connelly has deemed the Five Factors of college football: efficiency, explosiveness, field position, and finishing drives. SP+ has proven to be a very accurate tool in determining false favorites and separating pretenders from contenders so when it says that this line is an overreaction and disagrees with it pretty significantly (there's a 6½-point difference between SP+ and the line), we’re going to listen. This is also the ideal time for Virginia to confirm the hype that surrounded this program in the pre-season as a popular choice to represent the ACC. Had Virginia had any form of prevalence in this series as of late, we’d expect to see them favored here but as a result of their lack of a presence in The Commonwealth Cup, we get a chance to get the Cavaliers at a true value price. Forget the points, we’ll take UVA outright.
