#369 South Carolina +11½ over TEXAS A&M

Kyle Field – – College Station, TX

7:30 PM EST. Rivalry games bring out the unexpected. The Gamecocks would know a thing or two about that, as they have been both the benefactors and the victims of such chaos in two rivalry games they have already participated in this season. The Gamecocks opened their 2019 campaign with a bitter 24-20 loss to North Carolina in a border war clash that saw USC squander an 11-point lead to the Tar Heels and fall in gut-wrenching fashion when the Tar Heels would steal the win in the final minutes of play. The Gamecocks fell prey to the upset bug in that affair closing as 12.5-point favorite. However, Cocky would be courted by the very same creature when they were involved in another border war with their neighbors from the south, the Bulldogs of Georgia. Closing as a +20½-point underdog, the Gamecocks would venture down to Athens and hand the then #3-ranked Dawgs their first and only loss of the season in an overtime thriller. South Carolina would follow that up with a 38-27 loss against the Florida Gators but it was nonetheless a game that saw USC control the Orange and Blue for most of the match until controversy and in-game variances influenced the outcome. The turn of events also caused many ripped tickets for the many that jumped on the Gamecock bandwagon in response to their staged shocker against UGA. South Carolina would follow that up with a grisly 41-21 beat-down suffered at Rocky Top against Tennessee when the Cocks were priced as a four-point favorite. The October 26th result would be the hammer and nail that put an end to any form of notable public interest.

Since then, we haven’t heard much about South Carolina other than murmurs and whispers that did not speak highly of them. The stock on South Carolina took a nasty hit last Saturday when it was defeated 20-15 at home against visiting Appalachian State despite closing as a -6½-point favorite. This is the same Appalachian State team that also upset North Carolina in Chapel Hill earlier this season and attained the designation of the highest-ranked team in Sun Belt Conference history. In fact, Appalachian State even earned a ranking in this week’s College Football Playoff poll. Yet many outlets and analysts have pegged the loss to the Mountaineers as a disaster that diminishes the value of the Gamecocks program. However, this match-up offers USC a chance to quiet some of that noise.

South Carolina is a quality football team. Their lines are among the best in the SEC, they’re physical and they have playmakers too. Since Texas A&M joined the SEC in 2014, South Carolina has been paired with the Aggies as their cross-conference rival that play on an annual basis. The Gamecocks have yet to defeat the Aggies since this rivalry series commenced but it doesn’t change the fact that in their last four attempts, the margin of defeat was no greater than 11 points. This year, the Gamecocks figure to come in under that number again. While A&M is also a quality program, the Aggies have #4 Georgia and #1 LSU on deck to close out the year. The toll of playing one of the toughest schedules in the country could also come into play here, as the Aggies have already played Alabama, Clemson and Auburn. Grab the inflated number.
