3:30 EST. This is the time of year where chaos usually unfolds across the college football landscape when top-ranked teams begin to fall like dominoes. In surveying the menu this week, this contest has that kind of potential. The market opened with the Cougars as a mid-range favorite to a Colorado team that is currently riding a four-game losing streak. That in itself should raise a few eyebrows. After all, this is the same Buffaloes’ team that lost at home here in overtime to a then one-win Oregon State two weeks ago. Colorado incidentally was favored by 24½ points and they didn’t rebound last week at Arizona with a 42-34 loss as a three point underdog. The Buffs have very little market appeal here taking back less than a converted TD against a top-10 ranked team. This line screams to be cautious about spotting the points.

The Cougars could have very easily been bitten by the upset bug last week in Pullman against the California Golden Bears. As a 7½-point favorite, the Cougs failed to cover but that was the least of their troubles. Despite generating 414 yards of total offense, Washington State had to rely on a last-minute touchdown to avoid overtime with the Golden Bears and even then, Cal managed to be a disruptive force in the point after attempt. Had the affair been played in Strawberry Canyon, perhaps California would have sent Wazzou packing with a loss. Nevertheless, the game was a late-night affair that most missed on the East Coast due to the contest being played after bedtime. All most see is a No. 8 next to Washington State in the College Football Playoff rankings and all most recollect is the Cougars laying the wood to Oregon on primetime television. For Washington State, this is their last game outside of Pullman this year, as they inch ever so closer to the showdown with hated cross-state rival in the Apple Cup two weeks from now. This is a game that will be all for the chips in Washington State’s case as a possible College Football Playoff berth is on the table in addition to a Pac-12 Championship Game appearance. One must wonder if they are already starting to think about that. Furthermore, Washington State may start to feel the heat from the bright lights of being the top-ranked team in the Pac-12. The line is speaking to us and sometimes you have to play numbers and not teams and this is one of those times.
