PROVIDENCE -3½ over St. John’s

12:00 PM EST. Line is -3½ at most joints but we're going to sell a half point and take it up to -4 +100. We faded the Johnnies as five-point favorites over DePaul last game out and we ended up with a push in the 89-84 final but the Johnnies got the win to improve to 9-2.  We continue to point out how wins and losses are misleading and thus, St, John’s should be the poster boy for that hypothesis. St. John’s has just one win against a top 150 team (Monmouth). They were whacked by Kansas, 95-75, and lost at home to a Pittsburgh squad that is likely to finish last in the ACC Overall, the Red Storm have played the 352nd ranked schedule in the country so their nine wins in 11 games is mostly smoke and mirrors. In the spirit of “sticking with it”, the fade on St. John’s is still on.

We love that Providence is coming off a head-scratching loss to Marquette by 32 points. It’s not the first head-scratching loss of the season either, as the Friars lost 58-40 to Virginia back in late November. When a disturbing loss happens once, it’s forgivable but when it happens twice, the market starts to question a teams’ validity.

After that bad loss, the Friars would beat St. Peters (big deal) but after that they beat #20 Texas Tech by four without starting point guard Jared Bynum. Bynum has been back for a bunch of games. Providence has shown terrific balance, toughness and maturity. The Friars are the 10th most experienced team in the country, per KenPom, and four of their starters are averaging double-figure scoring. The addition of Indiana transfer Al Durham, a 6-4 senior, gives them another blue-collar attacking guard, who is shooting 6.8 free throws per game and converting 80.0 percent of them. In the follow up game to a wicked poor shooting performance, the Friars could not have handpicked a better Big East team to get right-sided against.
