Houston -4½ over Oregon

2:30 PM EST. This is the Maui Invitational consolation prize (call it the bronze if you will) after both Oregon and Houston lost yesterday. As a result of the Cougars losing to Wisconsin, we get them at a reduced rate today and we’re all over it. Some would argue that the same can be said about the Ducks loss to St Mary’s but we’d argue that game was priced in the pick ‘em range so an upset it was not. The Badgers beating the Cougs was truly an upset. 

Houston just didn’t execute very well yesterday, especially on defense in which it allowed an alarming 1.06 points per possession. That ain’t happening again here. Furthermore, the Cougars shot an incredibly ugly 8-of-15 on free throws. Houston is a top-five defensive team, so there’s little chance it relapses again. Houston qualifies as a good team and despite a so-so performance against the Badgers, it is one of the most efficient offensive squads in the country.

The Ducks brought in several new pieces this offseason and they just don’t look right and it’s not just one game, They looked like Chicago State in their 81-49 loss to BYU back in America eight days ago. Per KenPom, the Ducks rank outside the top-300 nationally in eFG%. They just can’t stop good teams and trust us when we suggest that Houston qualifies as such. Houston has four starters that could literally start for any team in the country.  In terms of X’s and O’s, Oregon is going to have double the trouble here, as we cannot envision a scenario in which they can score against Houston or defend either. By contrast, Houston figures to dominate scoring, defending and rebounding. Man, are the Cougars a bargain here so get in.
