Cal St Fullerton -9½ over Rio Grande Valley

8:00 PM EST. This neutral site game will be played at the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome on the campus of Northern Arizona University (NAU) in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Rio Grande is a WAC team that is 3-2 overall but is 2-1 against the spread with two straight covers. Meanwhile, Cal State has played just four games and is 2-2 overall, thus, spotting near double digits to a 3-2 team with two straight covers probably doesn’t look too appealing. That’s the point, as the market pays far too much attention to results as opposed to anything else, which provides us with this great opportunity to buy Call State at a largely reduced rate.

Cal State is ranked 186th in the country and we’re going to suggest that ranking is lower than it will be in a few weeks from now. Rio Grande is ranked 308th and that might be generous. Rio Grande suffered through more than just COVID and basketball losses last season. In February, head coach Lew Hill tragically passed away a day after the Vaqueros’ loss to Texas Southern. The UTRGV athletic department opted not to stick with interim head coach Jai Steadman and instead hired former Austin Peay head coach Matt Figger. Many thought the move by Figger was an odd one, but it’s probably safe to assume he’s making more money down in Edinburg. This is a Grand Valley team that has one Division II victory, one Division III victory and a two-point win over Northern Arizona (by two points) to comprise of its three wins. They also lost to Northern Arizona. In its only battle tested game of the season, Grand Valley played Arizona and lost by 54 points (104-50).

CSU Fullerton has played once at home this season, a 15-point win over George Washington. They also beat San Diego. Its two losses were to San Jose State by two points and to Santa Clara by seven but that game was tied very late so we could easily be discussing a 4-0 Titans’ squad.

Fullerton returns some key pieces on the perimeter. Overall it returns 75% of its minutes from last year's COVID impacted 16-game schedule. The Titans have an abundance of capable guards who could shot the lights out last year, led by Tray Maddox Jr. However, they severely lacked bulk up front. That changes this year with the arrival of three transfers that are contributing on the low block with one of them, EJ Anosike, just being named Big West Player of the Week. This one has blowout written all over it but it’s not priced like it because Rio has more wins.
