GRAND CANYON -3½ over Wyoming

9:00 PM EST. We absolutely love that Wyoming is 3-0 and we especially love that they have a victory over Washington (77-72) because that win, in terms of market perception, gives the Cowboys some credibility. Trust us when we inform you that Washington is horrible and probably the worst Power-6 team in the country. A win over Washington is equivalent to beating Willie Nelson in a 100-yard dash. Wyoming’s other two wins came against Detroit Mercy and Arkansas Pine Bluff, who rank 218th and 356th (out of 358 teams) in the country respectively, according to KenPom. To recap, Wyoming is 3-0 with a 40-point win, a 38-point win and a victory over a Power-6 program. It looks sweet on paper, which the market eats up like it’s fucking candy floss. The price here opened at -5½ before the efficient market jumped in. Opportunity is knocking.

Grand Canyon is also 3-0 and also without a credible win, at least on paper, which suits us just fine because the market is not privy to just how good the Antelopes are. GCU’s defense was tops in the WAC last season. They ranked 11th overall in eFG% allowed, and cleaned the glass at the nation’s 20th best rate. But Bryce Drew’s perimeter was also quite stingy. GCU allowed teams to shoot just 28% from deep against them, which certainly carries an element of luck, but all credit can’t be taken away. The guards/wings were also key in GCU’s success defending transition – per Hoop-Math GCU ranked 10th in the country in FG% allowed in the open floor. Six of those players are back and it’s becoming quite clear that this is becoming one of the toughest venues among all the mid-majors to play in because of the ‘Lopes fan base that is quickly making a name for itself (known as the Havocs).  Grand Canyon is ranked 126th in the country but it would surprise us not to see them as high as top-80 within a few weeks while Wyoming’s 136th place ranking goes the other way. Today. We get GCU as a short priced favorite here and we’re all over it.
