GRANDE RIVER VALLEY -6½ -109 over Dixie St

8:00 PM EST. As a former mentee to Lon Kruger, Lew Hill knows the inner-workings of building and sustaining a successful program. Within the WAC, that gold standard is located one state over in Las Cruces, where Chris Jans continuously restocks the talent supply with fit-for-system players via the transfer portal. Hill is copy-catting this formula to player acquisition and roster construction Rio Grande Valley. Depth and experience, albeit not always Division I experience, underpin each of the last three teams Hill has fielded in Edinburg. This mirroring approach has produced steady returns the last two seasons, as the Vaqueros took home the WAC’s bronze medal last year and finished above .500 the year prior. This year the Vaqueros are 6-3. They got crushed by Texas in the season opener but they only lost by just 13 to Texas A&M on December 6th. The Vaqueros are 5-1 at home.

The injury report says no injuries but trust us when you tell you that Dixie State is not 100% healthy. After racing out to a hot start (3-0 ATS in their first three contests), the Trailblazers have shown warts in their last two tilts. Granted, there’s no shame in surrendering 112 points to Gonzaga but following that up with another dud performance against a New Mexico team in complete disarray was discouraging, to say the least. However, context is king. Savvy veteran Dason Youngblood, a full-time starter on the perimeter, got hurt early against Gonzaga and did not play against the Lobos on Wednesday. Head coach Jon Judkins was left with a 7-man rotation to work with, which took a toll in the second half of both games. Keep in mind that the Trailblazers are already down a big-time bruiser in Mikey Frazier, a highly regarded transfer from Boise State, who’s been MIA since the third game of the season.

The WAC’s expansion initiative helped pull Dixie State up from the Division II ranks, raising the stakes on all future Trailblazer bouts. Being a Division I basketball brand comes with many perks, but for Dixie, travel convenience won’t be one of them. The Trailblazers played at home  and lost to New Mexico by nine on Wednesday and will make the 1500 mile trek to play this one. Banged up and in a  bad spot, the burdensome travel wasn’t even considered in this price. We trust we’re getting the superior team in a great spot and at a great price.
