UMASS +3 -110 over Saint Louis

7:00 PM EST. This might be the bargain of the day. The Billikens of Saint Louis are favored here because of a much better conference and overall record but as we have stated in the past, not all records are created equally. Saint Louis is 7-5 in the A-10 with an 18-7 overall record while the Minutemen are 4-8 in conference with an overall record of 10-15. Once again, we can now try and take advantage of the market perception that the Billikens are the superior team because of a superior record.

Saint Louis has played the 243rd ranked Strength of Schedule in the country. They have lost to every good team that they have played, which included a 17-point loss to Seton Hall, not one but two 14-point losses to Duquesne, a 12-point loss to Davidson, two losses to Dayton and a loss to Auburn. Saint Louis played 12 of its first 13 games at home against weak competition, so they were “all in” in an attempt by administration to make them look better than they are. It worked and while the Billikens have had some really decent performances, they have performed awful on the road for the most part. The Billikens last two road games were a one-point OT win at Lasalle and a 5-point win at St. Josephs. Combined, that pair is 2-22 in the conference and the Billikens were fortunate they didn’t go 0-2 in those two games. In 25 games overall, the Billikens have played seven lousy road games.

UMass has three wins in their last 10 games so its stock is down. However, the Minutemen have played the 130th ranked Strength of Schedule in America, which is 113 positions stronger than the Billikens. UMass’ last three games were a 2-point win over George Mason, a six-point loss at Rhode Island and an eight point loss at Dayton. Back on January 5, the Minutemen went into Saint Louis and lost by just three points. That loss came right after going into Akron and losing to the Zips by just six points. UMass has five losses this year by four points or less against some stiff competition so they are close to having a near identical record as Saint Louis. However, since wins and losses heavily influence the price, we get UMass as a dog at home when this game should be much closer to a pick-em. That’s good value.
