NCAA Tournament - West Regional - Vivint Smart Home Arena, Salt Lake City, UT

4:00 PM EST. We looked at this game long and hard for a reason to get behind the underdog here. After all, Kansas is college basketball royalty, where the game was practically invented. Kansas is one of the most well-known and most followed programs in the country and we’re always warning you to not pay a premium to back such teams. However, we see many pundits suggesting that the Jayhawks have had a rough season (that’s true) and that this is the most flawed team they’ve had in years. That may be true too but we still couldn’t come up with a reasonable reason to get behind the dog here. In fact, we’ve concluded that the Jayhawks are grossly underpriced here. Northeastern wasn’t even really supposed to be in this field but they won the CAA tournament for an auto-bid and here we are.

This is a good time to scoop up the Jayhawks given that their stock has suffered quite a bit this season. Their stock is down because 7-foot junior center Udoka Azubuike is still out and will miss the entire tournament but let’s not ignore that Kansas made a deep run in the conference tournament and Bill Self, in his 16th year, knows precisely how to prepare his team to peak this time of year. Yeah, the Jayhawks are a little soft in the frontcourt, but a Northeastern team that ranks 328th in the country in offensive rebound percentage doesn’t seem primed to take advantage. Defensively, the Huskies are a straight man-to-man team that has a hard time containing dribblers, so that should mean plenty of driving opportunities for Devon Dotson, Quentin Grimes and Ochai Agbaji. Asking the Jayhawks to cover against a CAA team that went 14-4 in a weak conference is not a stretch, it’s a bargain.
