Recent results tend to carry more weight in the market than games played weeks or months ago, which is about the only reason why we can justify Cal getting so much attention in this game. The Golden Bears knocked off the best team in the Pac 12 in #25 Washington at home in Berkeley on Thursday night. To call that game anything other than an outlier would be a false representation of the sport as a whole, as it was the Golden Bears first win after losing the 16 games prior. It took a 56% night from the floor and a 53.3% three-point shooting effort for Cal to get its only Pac 12 win this season. Those efforts are unlikely to be sustained here. If you saw the end of that game, you know that Cal celebrated that victory like it was the Final Four. It was a big party and we’re surprised they didn’t cut the nets down. A big letdown spot could be looming.

Speaking of overreacting to recent results, Washington State just got whacked 98-50 at Stamford the same night that Cal did the impossible. That 48-point defeat was indeed a head turner, as was the 92-79 loss the Cougars suffered to Utah the game prior, but being on the wrong side of those lopsided scores only allows us to back Wazzu at a discounted price. For reference, these two teams played up in Pullman in the middle of January and the Cougars won convincingly, 82-59, as a five-point favorite. This game has been billed as a "revenge" game for the suddenly surging Golden Bears, but there's an excellent chance that this matchup with the Cougars is simply a bad one for them. Another blowout could be on the docket but even if it’s not, we’re going with the best of it by getting the Cougars at a real discount.
