7:30 PM EST. Preseason prognostications can be a useful tool look back on as the year goes along, as they can be a good indicator of who is overachieving and who is not living up to expectations. To highlight the former, we introduce you to the UAB Blazers, who experienced some significant turnover in the offseason after losing two of the most important players in the history of the school. Chris Cokley and William Lee were staples for their four years on the Blazers, but they weren’t the only players to walk, as guard Nick Norton finished up as well. Norton was a member of the UAB squad that took out Iowa State in the opening round of the 2015 NCAAs and put the Blazers on the national radar. The media and market love an underdog story when it comes to The Big Dance and that's why teams like UAB, Florida Gulf Coast and the Golden Retrievers of UMBC leave such an impact. With those major departures, the Blazers were expected to be in the middle of the pack this season, but they are currently third in C-USA at 9-6 and 17-11 overall, but UAB played a very weak non-conference schedule that ranks 300 out of the 353 schools on KenPom. That’s the same conference mark and a similar overall as their opponents tonight, but that's where the similarities between these two teams end.

Western Kentucky stood alone on the top tier of the C-USA rankings before the 2018-19 campaign, but they sit tied third with UAB and Southern Miss a full three games back of Old Dominion with just three games to play, so a regular season title is pretty much out of the question. The dagger in that dream was a 67-63 loss at OD on Saturday. What the Hilltoppers will be playing for is a top-four seed so that they get the all-important bye in the first round of the C-USA Tournament. While their current state might be a disappointment on paper, WKU has played a tough non-conference schedule that ranks 48th in the nation and they have some nice wins over Power Five competition like West Virginia, Arkansas and most impressively #19 Wisconsin. The Hilltoppers are battle tested and so much better than their record would have you believe. This is a short price on the vastly superior team. Invest.
