Spotting this many points is rarely in our wheelhouse but this is such a mismatch that there isn’t a number the oddsmakers could put up to make us back off. Florida Gulf Coast does have some market credibility because of some recent exposure and success. FGCU was once again the class of the A-Sun last season, winning the conference by two games before falling short of the Big Dance in the postseason Tourney. Joe Dooley enjoyed five productive years at the helm of the Eagles, building on the success of Andy Enfield and his Dunk City crew. With Dooley’s departure this offseason to East Carolina, the Eagles are now under the leadership of 35-year old coach Michael Fly. FGCU loses a ton of production from last season (arguably its four most important players depart). To its credit, FGCU played Michigan St., Florida and Ole Miss in its non-conference portion of the season but lost by 24, 19 and 30 points respectively. Additionally, this will be the Eagles fourth road game in its last five starts and they are just not good enough to hang with this OVC juggernaut.
Lipscomb was a 6½-point choice over FGCU last year. Previous, there was rarely lines put out for this conference and so a team like Lipscomb spotting all this weight to a team that has competed with then on an equal level for years will have great appeal here but we’re urging you to proceed with caution if you’re on the pooch. The Bisons won at SMU, handed TCU its only loss of the season at that time and gave Louisville all it wanted in the KFC Yum! Center before losing by four. KenPom has the Bisons ranked as the 56th best team in the country while it has Florida Gulf Coast ranked 258th best. Lipscomb returns nearly everyone from a 23-10 (10-4) Tournament team including all five starters and Nathan Moran, an every-game starter back in 2016-17. Head coach Casey Alexander has built the Bisons program into a mini-A-Sun power, improving his squad’s performance in each of his five years at the helm. The Bisons can name the score and we’ll trust them to win them to have no mercy on this hated rival.
