8:00 PM EST. The appeal of Pepperdine comes after this teams’ ability to cover its last two games against the best schools in the WCC in St. Mary's and Gonzaga. While those results look good in the market, the Waves were fortunate to catch both of those powerhouses when they did, as the Bulldogs and Gaels let up after taking early double-digit leads with their places atop the conference all but guaranteed. Being big time chalk is a much different scenario than being asked to spot points. The Waves have only been priced as the betting favorite twice in conference play and failed to cover at home in a win over Loyola Marymount and lost outright to Santa Clara. Pepperdine is in the conversation when it comes to the weakest teams in college hoops, but its stock is at an unusual high. It's not often the Waves are overvalued, but that is the case today.
Portland is in the midst of a five-game losing skid, but the Pilots lost two of those games on the road by a combined four points. They also hung around with both St. Mary's and BYU their last two games and should be eager to take a big step down in competition here. These two teams played earlier this season in Portland, with the Waves forcing overtime, which might further lesson Portland's appeal in the market, but before it was all said and done, the Pilots pulled away and outclassed Pepperdine. A similar result is not out of the question here. This is a classic buy low/sell high situation in a game that the market will mostly ignore. We see an opportunity and a good one at that.
