8:30 PM EST. Often in these games, the final score does not tell the whole story. This is especially true when looking back at Maryland's weekend in Ann Arbor that saw the Terrapins lose a heartbreaker to the Wolverines. Maryland hit what appeared to be the game-winning three-pointer with three seconds to go, as the Wolverines had to go the length of the court with very little time. On the inbounds pass a ticky-tack foul was called on Maryland, which sent Michigan to the line to tie and win the game. That win shot the Wolverines into the Top-25, while Maryland is left holding the bag after a second straight loss.
The Golden Gophers season has been a roller coaster ride. After a hot start to the year, Minnesota jumped off the rails after former Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Reggie Lynch was suspended from the team and now faces expulsion after a second sexual misconduct investigation. Making things worse on the court was the loss of star Amir Coffey. Losing 2/5's of your starting lineup would burn any program in America, but the Golden Gophers were able to overcome the adversity in a 95-84 overtime win at Penn State last time out, and that W is carrying its weight into today’s market.
Despite their success on the road at PSU, we're not ready to say Minnesota has turned the corner on its many issues. With a short, weak bench and the return of two-star players nowhere on the horizon, it's not going to be long before this group starts to sputter, and we've seen evidence of that in blowout losses to Ohio State, Iowa, and Michigan State. The Gophers were an 8-point pooch at Penn State on Monday night and won by nearly double digits so we can understand there might be some appeal, as it appears Minnesota is taking a step down in competition here but we could not disagree more. Maryland is on the cusp of hitting its stride when it matters most and the 'Terps are on the way up while the Golden Gophers are a sinking ship. What would this line have been if Maryland hung on at Michigan and Penn State took care of business at home as expected? Winning on the road is so hard in college hoops and these mid-week games make it even worse, as the road school often has a big home game on deck. The Golden Gophers are no different, as freshly ranked Ohio State will be visiting Williams Arena in Minneapolis on Saturday in what is a much more high profile game. The Gophers might be content with the work that has already been done on this road trip, but even if Minny comes to play, it is in a tough spot against this hungry host. This is Maryland's game to lose, and we don't expect it to be close.
