That brings us to this little piece of market lunacy in Detroit, where the Pistons—yes, those Pistons—are suddenly a double-digit favorite.

On Friday, we backed Detroit outright against Philadelphia because it was the perfect buy-low opportunity. The Pistons had just suffered a gut-wrenching buzzer-beater loss to Cleveland, and the market was ready to throw them into the scrap heap. As a result, Detroit opened as a small home underdog to a Sixers squad that has owned them for years. But the market was wrong, the line got steamed up, and Detroit coasted to a 13-point win. Now, in the latest episode of "The Market Has No Memory," the Pistons go from underdog to lumber-laying behemoth.

Let’s do a little exercise. Imagine Detroit had been steamrolled by Philly like they were supposed to be. Imagine Garland's prayer never went in against Cleveland, and the Pistons just lost that game by a standard, non-miraculous eight points. Do you think we’d be staring at a 15.5-point swing in perception? Not a chance. But because Detroit unexpectedly won, the market is tripping over itself to adjust, which is how we arrive at this absurd price.

Consider this: these two teams have played three times this season, and the total margin of victory—across all three games combined—is seven points. Not one game, all three. Charlotte has won two of those outright. Yet today, we're supposed to believe Detroit is 10 points better? That’s the power of market overreaction.

Charlotte knows it can run with the Pistons. The Hornets are in this game every which way but on the scoreboard before tip-off. Once the ball goes up, they’ll be in it there too. The number is inflated, the reaction is overblown, and the value is clear. We’ll take the points every single time in a spot like this.
