9:05 PM EST. The Raps lost by one point in Game 5 on their home court but it’s not rocket science to figure out why. Nick Nurse is taking a lot of heat for the loss but that’s what social media does. They find a scapegoat and attack. The loss had nothing to do with Nurse.
The Warriors went 20 out of 42 from beyond the arc while the Raps went 8 for 32. That’s 12 more triples by the Warriors or 36 points. Toronto lost by one point! There is little to no chance of the Warriors dominating the three-point shooting battle like they did in Game 5. Toronto lost last game because the Warriors got extremely lucky that the Raptors missed 24 three-point attempts. Had they missed 23, this series would be over. End of story. Period.
Despite getting hurt again, Kevin Durant was also a factor. He scored 12 points in the first 11 minutes but more importantly, he gave the Warriors a massive energy boost. Even when he went down and the arena “cheered”, that, too, gave the Warriors energy to finish what KD started. Do not forget what the Warriors looked like without KD in Games 1 through 4. They looked tired, beat up, offensively challenged and worn out. Now add in the 5½ hours of travelling from San Francisco to Toronto to start the series, back to San Francisco, then back to Toronto and now back to San Francisco and the challenges they face here are even more difficult. Also add in the letdown factor after the KD boost and after a near miracle rally with under two minutes to go. Kevin Durant is a seven-foot giant with the heart of a lion that wanted to get back in there to help his team. He was the best player on the floor for 12 minutes and now he’s gone again. We repeat, do not forget what the Warriors looked like without KD and with several other players all banged up. Kevon Looney looked like he was hanging by a thread last game.
Toronto now prepares for the Warriors without KD again and that’s a much simpler assignment and one they have thrived in, which brings us to the most important aspect of this game ---value. A banged up beaten down Golden State team cannot be the same price at home as Toronto was on their home floor.
