Katlyn Chookagain +135 over Jessica Andrade
Posted at 3:00 PM EST.
8:45 PM EST. Ciryl Gane-Ante Delija was initially scheduled to be in the co-headliner, but a contract dispute knocked her out of the bout and now Katlyn Chookagian will step in on short notice. Not only do we love backing a fighter that steps in on such an occasion, we get the #1 ranked 125 lb contender. Why is Chookagian the pooch here? Well, market perception is that the women's flyweights are a one-woman division with Valentina Shevchenko shanking chicks left and right, Chookagian included. The UFC is desperate to inject some interest in the flyweights and a win for Andrade would have her leapfrogging everyone on her way to that opportunity. However, rarely do the UFC's best-laid plans work out the way they want.
Andrade is the betting chalk here because she is a former champion and is the more well-known fighter, as she's been a UFC mainstay since 2013. Tonight she makes her flyweight debut after dropping two straight fights to Zhang Weili and Rose Namajunas, the latter of which was a Fight of the Night winner. Andrade is being forgiven for those defeats and perhaps rightfully so, as Rose and Weili are two of the world's best female fighters. Andrade holds a win over Namajunas as well, which adds to her market appeal. However, one must wonder what her mindset is after nearly reaching the top of the 135 lb division before tumbling in such a way that she decided to switch divisions. Fighters do not change weight classes when things are going well. We expect that trend to continue.
