UFC 249 - VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena - Jacksonville, FL

Dominick Cruz +187 over Henry Cejudo

11:45 PM EST. It's hard to take anything a fight promoter has to say seriously. That is especially true when there are pay-per-views to sell. Still, Dana White may have outdone himself with this hot take in regards to UFC 249's co-main event between Bantamweight Champion Henry Cejudo and fighter-turned-commentator-turned-fighter, Dominick Cruz. "I think it's the biggest upset ever," said Uncle Dana, adding, "I'd put it right up there with Matt Serra vs. Georges St-Pierre." That's saying a lot when you consider that "GSP" went off at as high as -1300. By comparison, the former Olympic gold medalist, Cejudo, is a much cheaper price in this fight tonight.

One could debate the merits of Cruz, the former champion, jumping to the front of the line, but international travel bans to the U.S.A. wiped out a pair of options with #1 ranked Marlon Moraes (Brazil) and #3 ranked Petr Yan (Russia) unable to attend. Those two fighters will face each other at the UFC's June 13th event, which takes place in Kazakhstan. Are Americans Aljamain Sterling (#2) and Cory Sandhagen (#4) more deserving than Cruz? Of course, however, with Endeavor, the UFC's parent company bleeding money, the most high profile matchup available is always going to take the cake.

To recap, we have the president of the UFC telling anyone who will listen that Dominick Cruz has no chance to have his hand raised at the end of this fight and there is the perception in the market that "The Dominator" has no business in the Octagon with the one time "Champ-Champ." Admittedly, Cruz's last UFC appearance was a one-sided beatdown from Cody Garbrandt over three years ago in a fight he lost the very championship he will compete for here tonight. In most cases, we believe that ring rust is real, but with Cruz, it's a different story. "The Dominator" has a strong opinion on that topic and we're not going to argue with him. Not only is Cruz wired like no other fighter mentally, but "The Dominator" has been here before. After a three year layoff from 2011 to 2014, Cruz blitzed Takeya Mizugaki in just 1:01, knocking him out at UFC 178. Then, Cruz missed another 15 months before taking the Bantamweight Championship from T.J. Dillashaw. It was a great fight and that performance is even more impressive when you consider that Dillashaw has gone down as one of the all-time great dopers in light of his positive test of EPO and subsequent suspension, which he is currently serving.

There are only two ways to look at this contest. Either Cejudo, who some in the media are starting to call the greatest combat sports athlete of all time, is the biggest bargain in the history of MMA, or "The Dominator" has much more than a puncher's chance to regain the Bantamweight Championship for the third time and oddsmakers know it. We'll side with the latter.
