Chicago +100 over Pittsburgh

7:05 PM EST. Bounced around between AAA and the majors last year prior to the trade deadline, Bryce Wilson (RHP - PIT) didn’t have much success in either place. Given a chance to stick in rotation after the trade to Pittsburgh but subpar swing and miss rate and K% dipped further and he dealt with arm and hamstring issues. Frankly, nothing has changed. Wilson lacks everything. He has a mere 67 K’s in 99 innings. He has an ERA/xERA split of 5.01/6.07 with a swing and miss rate of 7.2%. He’s had some bad fortune too but c’mon, dude pitches for the Pirates so his bad fortune started when he got traded there and it ain’t going away. Pittsburgh is favored over the Cubs because why?

Javier Assad (RHP - CHC) is making just his 6th start of the year and sixth in his career. Signed by the Cubs out of Mexico, the 6'1", 200-pound right-hander was moving up the ladder a year at a time and pitching fairly well until he reached Double-A for the first time in 2021 and really struggled. Never known at the time for dominating hitters, he got by on decent control with his then low-90s fastball. Repeating the level this year was night and day, and evidence that his now mid-90s fastball and a new upper-80s cutter were proving effective. He went to Triple-A Iowa and made seven starts and continued to get 25% strikeouts and even better control. With a mid-70s slurve and a low-80s slider, he has the pitch mix and quality to succeed against upper level batters. His groundball rate last game was 80%. He’s keeping hitters off balance and gaining confidence in the process. He has 23 K’s in 21 frames. Time will tell if he’s legit or not but with his new stuff, this is real progress for Assad and he’s absolutely worth getting behind here as a dog to Wilson and the Pirates.
