Tampa Bay -1½ +155 over Boston

Don’t look now but the Rays are just five games back of the Yanks and are now a half game up on the Blue Jays. This is not the first time a team caught fire precisely at the right time so look out. The Rays' confidence and momentum is soaring after winning six of seven of 12 of their last 15. Today, they’ll send out Drew Rasmussen (RHP - TAM), who is also soaring. Check out his elite stats at home (1.87 ERA, 0.77 WHIP in 64 innings. In those 64 frames, he’s only allowed 40 hits with a normal BABIP. Over his last five starts, Rasmussen has walked two lousy batters in 28 innings while striking out 30. Spotting 1½-runs here, the Rays are a great play.

Meanwhile, 42-year old Rich Hill (LHP - BOS) is not such a great play. On July 6, an MRI detected some tearing of a ligament in Hill’s knee and he was set to be fitted for a brace on July 7. He was projected at that time to miss several weeks. The Red Sox activated Rich Hill on August 1 but did not immediately reinsert him into the rotation and it’s been a lot of the same ol’, same ol’. What that consists of is squeezing out innings and hoping that those hard hit balls aren’t falling. Hill has outpitched estimators again. The skills are in decline just about everywhere as you'd expect at his age. Volume, then, becomes even more important, and that's not exactly his strong suit. If Boston were in a playoff race, Hill might be watching from the rails but they’ll let him finish it out because why wouldn’t they? We’ll trust his ass will end up horseshoe-less for this start against the league’s hottest team
