Cleveland +175 over CHICAGO
8:05 PM EST. We don’t care if the Baseball Team gives up 10 runs in the first inning or if they lose by 10 runs because this is a wager that must be made. Kyle Hendricks (RHP - CHC) is the superior starter in this matchup but that doesn’t mean he’ll have the superior start.
Eli Morgan (RHP - CLE) made his major league debut on May 28 against the Blue Jays and was whacked. He would not start again until June 17th, this time against the Orioles and once again he was whacked. Morgan, an 8th round pick in 2017 from Gonzaga, has a small stature (5’10”) and below average velocity. He has been a command-oriented pitcher who offers one of the organization’s best change-ups and quite a bit of deception. Though not blessed with eye-popping velocity, he sequences well and is able to spot his 87-90 mph fastball to all quadrants of the strike zone. Morgan uses both a curveball and slider and while neither stand out, both can be dropped in the zone for strikes. His best pitch is a fading change-up that features the same arm speed as his fastball. Given his lack of size and velocity, this may not be a top prospect in the system. However, other farmhands in the Indians organization have been undervalued in the past but let’s put all that aside, as this has nothing to do with the pitching matchup and so much more to do with the price.
Have you seen the Cubs play lately? Chicago has scored two runs or less in eight of their last nine games. They just mustered a combined 11 lousy hits in a just completed three-game set vs the Marlins and followed that up by getting shut out last night in the opener v Cleveland. Over their last six games, the Cubbies have 24 hits total and in the month of June, they are hitting a combined .165. Three of their nine regulars are hitting under .115 in the month of June (we’re not kidding). Facing the Cubbies these days is like facing a roster full of pitchers that are hitting and if the Cubs snap out of it today, good for them but they cannot be priced in this preposterous range when they’re swinging at everything and hitting nothing.
